Artemisia Annua (Sweet Annie); Bergamot (Wild); Cedar Leaf (Thuja); Davana;  Eucalyptus Masala (Wild); Lavender, Bulgaria (Organic), Niaouli (MQV); Zanthoxylum (Wild); Grapeseed Oil; Sage, White Hydrolat

Artemisia Annua (Sweet Annie)  Sweet Wormwood / Qing hao
Artemisia annua carries a potent, clarifying intelligence. its chemistry is rich in artemisinin, the compound that became globally recognized for its antimalarial properties after being isolated by Tu Youyou in 1972, a discovery that earned her the Nobel Prize in Physiology/Medicine.

Medicinal and Therapeutic Benefits: A cooling, clearing ally for the system that supports immune resilience and helps the body release excess heat, tension, and stagnation. Great for fever reduction, cooling inflammation and supporting the body during microbial challenges.

Emotional & Spiritual Properties: Artemisia annua cuts through illusion. It is a guide for those needing to reclaim clarity, sovereignty, and inner calm. It supports the kind of intelligence that is both instinctive and refined — the fox-mind that knows when to leap and when to wait.

Cultural & Historical Lineage: Artemisia annua’s story stretches back thousands of years in China, where it was revered as Qing hao — a plant of cooling virtue and life-saving potential. Its global significance expanded dramatically in the 20th century when artemisinin, a key constituent, became a cornerstone of modern malaria treatment.

*The  aromatherapy literature contains some cautions about prolonged use and/or high dosages; Artemisia annua is definitely a powerful essential oil that should be respected and used in very small quantities.  If you often experience sensitivity to foods and topical products, please exercise judgment and proceed slowly with Artemisia. Or as the fox might observe…”use wisely”.

Retail Price:  15 ml $32; 120 ml $224

Bergamot (Wild) Citrus bergamia
Bergamot’s essential oil is pressed from the peel, carrying a complex aromatic profile that is bright, floral, slightly spicy, and gently herbal. It is widely recognized for its uplifting yet calming effect on the nervous system — a rare dual action that makes it a cherished ally for emotional steadiness.

Its chemistry includes limonene, linalyl acetate, and linalool, compounds associated with soothing the system and brightening the emotional and mental fields.

One of its greatest effects is the lifting of SAD…Seasonal Affective Disorder.  With short days, long nights and ferocious weather patterns this winter, I have received numerous questions about oils that can help with “winter depression”.  Bergamot is my number one choice for that, though all citruses are helpful.

That brings up another point…many people forget that Bergamot is a citrus!  We once had a client who slathered bergamot on her legs and feet…and, forgetting it was a citrus, went to a spa and used the tanning bed!  She was going on vacation and wanted to get a “base tan”.  Well, she had pretty serious burns on her feet, and could not even wear shoes.  She used lavender and helichrysum, and healed quickly enough to wear sandals…but we never forgot her panic when she called us, wondering what to do!  So don’t be deceived by “foxy” Bergamot…she is definitely a citrus, through and through.

Emotional & Spiritual Properties: Bergamot carries a signature of lightness, clarity, and emotional unburdening. It supports mood balancing, helps ease tensions in the body, and offers a sense of renewed optimism. Spiritually, Bergamot feels like a gentle lantern: it brightens without overwhelming, guiding one back to inner equilibrium.

Cultural & Historical Lineage: Bergamot’s story is deeply rooted in Southern Italy, especially Calabria, where it has been cultivated for centuries and where most of the world’s bergamot essential oil is still produced. The fruit’s origins are somewhat mysterious — possibly arriving from Asia before finding its true home in the Mediterranean.  Historically, it became a prized ingredient in perfumery, valued for its ability to lift and refine aromatic blends, and it famously flavors Earl Grey tea. This lineage gives Bergamot a cultural identity of refinement, artistry, and sensory pleasure — a citrus with depth and history.

Retail Price:  15 ml $37; 120 ml $259

Cedar Leaf (Thuja)  Thuja occidentalis
Thuja’s essential oil is distilled from the scaly leaves and twigs of the tree often called white cedar, though it is botanically a member of the cypress family. Its chemistry is dominated by thujone, which gives the oil its sharp, camphoraceous aroma and its strong physiological activity.

Medicinal Benefits: Supports respiratory clarity and opening, traditionally used for congestion and cold-season challenges. Its antimicrobial and antiviral properties make it a natural purifier, historically used for skin concerns, especially stubborn growths such as warts.  It is best used in topical applications only.

Emotional & Spiritual Properties: Cedar Leaf carries the archetype of the guardian — firm, discerning, and boundary-setting.  Cedar Leaf fits perfectly into our ‘crazy like a fox” theme.  In many indigenous traditions, the fox is seen as one who is wise in the ways of the forest/nature, or a resourceful  guardian.

Cedar Leaf helps clear energetic congestion, especially when one feels overwhelmed or powerless.  The crisp, bright aroma cuts through emotional fog and stagnant energy, and supports emotional sovereignty.   Used as a purification plant or essence, Cedar Leaf offers clarity of purpose, especially when navigating complex or draining environments and restores a sense of alertness and inner strength.   Her properties of protection and purification create a sense of standing within a circle of ancient trees, and feeling the knowing and protection they convey.

Cultural & Historical Lineage: Cedar Leaf’s  lineage is deeply woven into Indigenous cultures of North America, especially in the Pacific Northwest and the Northeast where it was used as a purification plant, often burned or smudged to cleanse spaces and energies. Cedar Leaf was called “Arborvitae”, the Tree of Life, by early European explorers, who used its vitamin-rich foliage to prevent scurvy, and honored its life-preserving qualities. This dual identity — Indigenous sacred tree and European survival medicine — gives Cedar Leaf a cross-cultural gravitas. It is a tree of protection, endurance, and deep-rooted wisdom.

*Due to high thujone content, Cedar Leaf essential oil is traditionally used externally and applied sparingly, with great respect for its potency.

Retail Price:  15 ml $30; 120 ml $212

Davana  Artemisia pallens
Davana has always been known as a plant that restores integrity to what has been compromised — physically, emotionally, spiritually. Davana has a “crazy like a fox” nature  — the one that surprises people with its depth and potency because of its sweetly-rich, disarming aroma.

But Davana should never be underestimated.  Years ago, one of my students, who was the caretaker for her elderly aunt, called me, asking for guidance regarding alleviating the deep, infected bed sores that afflicted her aunt.  Nothing was working, and in fact, all efforts seem to aggravate the condition.  I recommended that she apply Davana to the infected areas, as it is very gentle on the skin, and is widely known for effective skin renewal, especially when tissue has been stressed or compromised. Within days, they saw significant improvement, and within a couple of weeks, the areas had healed.

Medicinal Benefits: Other ways Davana can be used for wound healing include cuts, or scrapes where the skin is broken. Davana’s antimicrobial and antioxidant properties help create a cleaner, more supportive environment for the body’s own healing processes. In women’s health, Davana helps to regulate the menstrual cycle and relieve associated cramps, pelvic pain, and menopausal symptoms.

Emotional & Spiritual Properties: Davana is a powerful relaxant that helps reduce stress, anxiety, and nervousness, while promoting a joyful mood. Spiritually, it is often called a “mirror” for the soul, helping us recognize our true selves and let go of self-defeating, inauthentic patterns. This exquisite oil, relatively unknown in the US, is used in other cultures as a guide during initiation or transitions, aiding in the process of individuation, personal growth and emotional healing. Davana is deeply rooted in Indian Ayurvedic  traditions, especially in relation to emotional balance, and uplifting one’s spirits.

Cultural & Historical Lineage: Davana holds a central role in Hindu traditions and is considered highly sacred to Lord Shiva, the God of Transformation. Davana flowers are traditionally offered to Lord Shiva in southern India as an act of devotion and transformation.

Retail Price:  5 ml $46; 15 ml $119; 120 ml $833

Eucalyptus Masala Eucalyptus rostrata/camaldulensis
This wildcrafted Nepalese variety is known for its exceptional respiratory potency, even among the eucalyptus family. It is described as one of the strongest respiratory allies available, with a profile that supports deep clearing and systemic resilience.

Medicinal Benefits: Eucalyptus Masala offers antiviral, antibacterial, and antifungal support, giving it a broad-spectrum purifying effect on the system.  Producers in Nepal specifically highlight its effectiveness for respiratory conditions, as well as chronic cough and congestion, which is why it has become a signature offering in artisan distillations.  Additionally, this powerful oil can help relieve back pain, nerve pain and mouth infections, reflecting its ability to move stagnation and soothe irritated tissues.

Emotional & Spiritual Properties: Eucalyptus Masala carries a fierce, invigorating presence — the kind of plant that wakes up the senses and clears the path ahead. This aspect of its aromatic profile helps dissolve mental confusion, or emotional heaviness, bringing forth clarity, decisiveness, and forward movement.  Great for times when you feel you are mired in stagnation.

Spiritually, it ushers in previously unseen possibilities…like a gust of mountain wind it is purifying, bracing, and liberating.    This little known, but powerful essence aligns with the archetype of the path opener — the one who clears obstacles, sharpens perception, and restores vitality, much like our wise fox,  the quick-minded and wise guide who clears the way for a new, brighter path.

Cultural & Historical Lineage: Eucalyptus Masala’s story is tied to the mountain landscapes of Nepal, where small producers wild-harvest and distill it with deep familiarity with its medicinal strength. We were unfamiliar with this powerful variety until our farmer, Rana, introduced it to us. Its lineage reflects local knowledge of respiratory healing, especially in high-altitude regions where cold, damp, and smoke exposure are common.

The species itself, Eucalyptus rostrata (also known as Eucalyptus camaldulensis), has a long history of being planted globally for its resilience and adaptability — a tree that thrives in challenging environments and offers medicine that does the same.

The name “Masala” hints at its spicy, robust aromatic character, distinguishing it from other softer eucalyptus species. This gives it a cultural identity of ruggedness, endurance, and elemental clarity.

Lavender, Bulgaria (Organic)  Lavandula angustifolia
Bulgarian Lavender adds a soothing, harmonizing note to these aromatherapy choices…the calm center within the wildness, the fox’s quiet intelligence before the leap.

Medicinal Benefits: Bulgarian Lavender is celebrated for its soothing, restorative, and harmonizing influence on the body and nervous system. It is one of the most therapeutically versatile essential oils in the world, with benefits that span skin, mood, and respiratory support.  Provides relief for acne, sunburn, bruises, and superficial skin injuries, reflecting its long-standing use for wound care and tissue calming. Also, lavender offers support for pain relief, including headaches, muscle pain and pain from minor injuries, like bumps and bruises.

Emotional and Spiritual Properties: Lavender’s profound influence on sleep, stress, and anxiety make it a cornerstone for emotional and nervous-system balance.  Its aroma — sweet, floral, herbaceous, and lightly balsamic — reflects a chemistry rich in linalool and linalyl acetate, compounds associated with calming and restorative effects. Lavender eases worry, soothes the Central Nervous System (CNS), and lightens unconscious tension held in the stomach or muscles, opening the door to a gentle return to rest, trust, and openness. Spiritually, lavender has long symbolized purification, serenity, and grace. It clears the energetic field without force, creating space for calm awareness and deeper presence.

Cultural & Historical Lineage: Bulgarian Lavender carries a lineage that spans ancient civilizations and modern therapeutic traditions. Lavender has been used since antiquity for medicinal, spiritual, and aromatic purposes, including cleaning cuts, soothing irritations, and scenting sacred spaces. Ancient Egyptians used lavender in mummification, and jars in Tutankhamun’s tomb still held its scent after 3,000 years.  Romans used lavender in baths and introduced it to England, where it became a staple of folk medicine and household care.

Niaouli (MQV)  Melaleuca quinquenervia viridiflora
Niaouli is distilled from the leaves and twigs of Melaleuca quinquenervia, a close relative of Tea Tree. Its chemistry gives it a rare combination of strength and skin-friendliness. It’s the plant that works behind the scenes, restoring clarity, supporting the body’s defenses, and offering steady, reliable healing. It’s the kind of oil people underestimate…until they use it!  I always say that it is an “unsung hero” …not flashy, not floral, but incredibly effective, and a “work horse”, because once you have used it, you will turn to it again and again for just about anything you are addressing.

Medicinal Benefits: Niaouli provides broad-spectrum cleansing power, with strong antiseptic and antimicrobial activity. An oil known for respiratory support, easing congestion and helping clear the sinuses while improving focus and alertness. Aids in clearing infections, acne, irritations, and stubborn topical concerns — a gentler alternative to Tea Tree for sensitive skin. Niaouli has an invigorating, clarifying aroma that lifts the system without overwhelming it.

We can easily borrow some words associated with the traits of a fox to sum up the energy, feeling and benefits of this oil:  bright, capable, delicate, significant and resourceful.

Emotional & Spiritual Properties: Niaouli carries the emotional signature of clarity, resilience, and energetic purification.  It supports the clearing of emotional “static” or overwhelm, strengthens boundaries without hardness, provides mental alertness and the ability to stay present. Using Niaouli brings a sense of being “cleaned out” energetically — leaving you refreshed, renewed, and ready.  Niaouli’s beautiful blossom even looks like a “bottle cleaner”, a great visual reminder of her healing properties.

Cultural & Historical Lineage: Niaouli’s story spans Madagascar, New Caledonia, Australia, and Southeast Asia, where it has long been used for its cleansing and protective qualities. Indigenous communities in Australia used the leaves for medicinal poultices and respiratory relief. The tree’s paperbark layers were used for shelter, wrapping, and ceremonial purposes — a plant woven into daily life and survival. The essential oil was first distilled in the early 20th century and quickly became valued for its versatility and reliability. Niaouli’s cultural identity is that of the quiet backbone of a community’s medicine chest.

Zanthoxylum (Wild)  Timur / Sichuan Pepper / Prickly Ash
Zanthoxylum (pronounced Zan-THOX-a-lum) essential oil is distilled from the dried fruit husks and seeds of the species armatum. Its multi-dimensional aroma is described as bright citrus, woody, green, peppery, spicy, and has a “tingling” quality when applied topically that the plant is famous for.

Medicinal Benefits: Zanthoxylum offers respiratory support, opening breathing passages with its decongestant action. This oil helps stimulate and moisturize the larynx, making it valued for vocal clarity — singers, storytellers, and public speakers use it to support voice performance.  It is also helpful for treating mouth and gum infections.  Zanthoxylum has potent antimicrobial and digestive-support properties. Its lively chemistry makes it a circulatory stimulant, helping move stagnation and enliven the system.

Emotional & Spiritual Properties: Zanthoxylum carries a signature of awakening, clarity, and energetic activation.  It supports mental sharpness — cutting through fog, fatigue, or indecision.  Energetically it offers great benefit when one feels stuck, stagnant, or dulled. In line with the physical vocal support mentioned above, Zanthoxylum also supports expression spiritually and emotionally — helping people speak their truth with confidence, and deal with emotion-laden conversations with a sense of clarity without judgment.
Spiritually, it feels like a plant of quickening — the fox’s sudden leap, the moment of insight, the spark that turns awareness into action, barriers into bridges and challenges into creative opportunities.

Cultural & Historical Lineage: Zanthoxylum has a deep, cross-cultural history across China, Japan, Nepal, and the Eastern Himalayas. Known as Sichuan pepper, it has been used for centuries in Chinese cuisine and medicine, valued for its tingling, warming, and digestive qualities. Historical accounts describe it as Chinese Wild Pepper, with an aroma reminiscent of cubeb and guaiacwood — a spice with both culinary and medicinal identity. This gives Zanthoxylum a cultural presence that is earthy and refined — a plant of kitchens, temples, mountains, and medicine chests.

Retail Price:  15 ml $30; 120 ml $211

Grapeseed Oil  Vitis Vinifera
Grapeseed oil is pressed from the seeds left over after winemaking — a humble origin that belies its potency. Its profile is dominated by polyunsaturated fatty acids, especially linoleic acid, which makes it deeply supportive for skin integrity and repair. Grapeseed oil carries the fox’s subtle wisdom — not loud, not flashy, but essential. It brings: nourishment, renewal, gentle strength and a green, grounded intelligence.

Medicinal Benefits: Helps moisturize, soften, and restore the skin, especially when dryness or irritation is present. Grapeseed Oil supports scar reduction, pore tightening, and acne healing, reflecting its long-standing use as a topical rejuvenator. Contains vitamin E, contributing antioxidant support and helping protect the skin’s natural barrier.

Emotional & Spiritual Properties: Grapeseed oil carries a gentle, grounding emotional signature — subtle but deeply supportive. Offers a sense of renewal and softening, especially when the emotional body feels dry, brittle, or overextended. Gives a feeling of being held lightly, without heaviness or overwhelm. Provides support for receptivity and openness, helping one absorb nourishment — physically and energetically.

Cultural & Historical Lineage: Grapeseed oil has been part of human healing for over 6,000 years, with references reaching back to the Old Testament. Ancient texts describe its use in dishes like Pulse, valued for its health benefits. European healers used grapevine sap and leaves to treat skin diseases, inflammation, bleeding, and digestive issues, showing how every part of the vine was considered medicinal. By the 1930s, grapeseed oil began to be produced in Germany, France, and Italy, gaining recognition for its nutritional and skinsoothing benefits.

This gives grapeseed oil a lineage of practicality, nourishment, and everyday healing — a plant ally woven into both ancient ritual and modern wellness.

White Sage Hydrolat Salvia apiana
White Sage hydrolat is a water-based extract created during steam distillation — carrying both the aromatic molecules and the watersoluble plant nutrients. It offers purification without the intensity of the essential oil or the smoke from smudging. White Sage hydrolat is the fox’s quiet clarity — the ability to slip through confusion, clear the path, and move with intention.

Medicinal Benefits: Purification and clarity, traditionally used to clear stagnant or heavy energy. White Sage Hydrolat has a herbaceous profile that reflects its cleansing nature and makes it supportive for topical use on skin prone to irritation or congestion.

Emotional & Spiritual Properties: White Sage hydrolat carries the essence of purification.  Its emotional and spiritual qualities are subtle, steady, and deeply supportive. This hydrolat offers energetic clearing and a sense of mental focus, helping dissolve distraction or emotional clutter. Provides support for transition moments — before meditation, after difficult conversations, when shifting environments

Cultural & Historical Lineage: White Sage is native to the coastal mountains of Southern California and Northern Baja California, where it has been used for centuries by Indigenous peoples such as the Chumash, Cahuilla, and Tongva for purification, prayer, and spiritual ceremony. Traditionally burned in smudging rituals to clear negative energy and prepare spaces for ceremony or healing. Considered a sacred plant, deeply tied to identity, lineage, and spiritual continuity among Native communities. Modern overharvesting has threatened wild populations, making ethical sourcing essential and part of honoring its cultural roots.

General Usage Guidelines: Accessing Nature’s Medicine

Please note: Since WOTE only offers pure, single (unblended), undiluted essential oils, unlike the vast majority of companies, they can be considerably more potent than the average person is used to.   As we have had several questions from new customers about usage, we will provide some general guidelines here (see below) and also touch on usage, where appropriate, in each description.  These guidelines and techniques are covered in-depth in our Level 1 Medicinal Aromatherapy classes, but we are now reaching a larger audience, so we want to be responsive to that.

General Guidelines:  We do not recommend taking essential oils internally; the most effective therapeutic mode of use is topically, over the area of concern (e.g., over the stomach, if digestive issues occur).  A few drops in a bottle of water is fine, but normally, we advise topical application, going to the soles of the feet if an essence is hot (temperature-wise) or skin sensitive/photo-sensitive.

A good rule of thumb for an average adult is 5-7 drops of an oil; for children over 12, 3–4 drops; below 12, 1-2 drops on the soles of the feet.  Remember, the body only absorbs/utilizes about 50%, on average, of the oil applied (just as when you take a vitamin, you do not actually receive 100% of its total benefit, but actually 50-75%+ depending upon a number of factors, e.g., dietary fat, molecular structure).

So keep that in mind when you are deciding how many drops to use. If you want to receive/utilize approximately 5 drops, then you should increase the “rule of thumb” accordingly, taking into account your body will not be getting 100% of the actual amount of drops you apply topically.  So, in that instance you would generally need to apply a total of 8-10 drops.

There is no need to be nervous about “doing it perfectly”.  As Kurt Schnaubelt, PhD, a leader in the field of aromatherapy has written, essential oils are, by their nature, benign.  But people are different,  situations are different, and oil quality varies greatly in the US.  Just like cooking, you can always add more, but you can’t remove what you have already put in.  So,  start conservatively, and appreciate that application is more of an art than a science.  But once you get familiar with the oils and learn how your body reacts to them, it will become second nature.

Please do not hesitate to consult with your Wisdom of the Earth aromatherapist, or contact us, if you have questions about application or usage.  We are happy to give product information, but if a health situation is complicated or serious, we would suggest you consult your health professional or schedule a consultation with Cynthia Olivera, Educational Director, or Audre Gutierrez, Owner.
