July Wisdom of the Earth Promotion: So Much to Celebrate!

This July, we are awash in the spirit of celebration!  We are celebrating three important milestones, so we decided to call this month’s promotion a Celebration and we are inviting you to celebrate with us.  Here’s what we are celebrating:

The 250th Anniversary of our Democracy:   In George Washington’s first inaugural address, he described the new nation as an “experiment entrusted to the hands of the American people.”  That phrasing is remarkable because it seeded  the idea that the country was not a finished product, but a bold, collective undertaking—something noble, fragile, and full of possibility.   And, importantly,  it casts “we the people” as its stewards. 

Also, July marks the 2nd Anniversary of Wisdom of the Earth’s Monthly Promotions.  This month we are stepping into our third year of providing special monthly offerings to our WOTE community.  Our initial goal was to work through some large supplies of oils purchased when we had greater storage capacity;  another goal was to educate  others about the healing and supportive properties of  less well-known essential oils and hydrolats.   We are grateful to our customers for helping us to achieve both of those objectives.

Frankincense, Rare Black (Wild)
Boswellia neglecta

Rare Black Frankincense is a deep, sweet and warmly resinous essential oil,  accessed in the wild via the boring activity of a native insect.   Due to this activity, the uniquely black resin seeps from the opening created by the insect,  allowing it to be collected  by the harvester.  In other frankincense species, a human harvests the resin by using a machete to “bleed” the frankincense tree.  Thus, as the farmer personally attested to me, “this Frankincense ‘neglecta’ is the most sustainably produced Frankincense in the world.” 

This very special Frankincense delivers a profound, anchoring aroma that instantly enlivens the heart and the spirit.  Historically, though it is a relatively new oil for us (last few years) it occupies a special place at WOTE because, just like in “the early days”,  we learned and sourced directly from the farmer.  This beautiful Frankincense is a perfect example of why we still prioritize operating that way.

Galbanum
Ferula galbaniflua

Galbanum has an earth-and-woods aroma that instantly cuts through psychological blocks. It re-energizes your system, providing the vital physical momentum and focus needed to enable movement where energy has become blocked or lethargic.  This was one of the very first essential oils I ever experienced! 

For those of you who do not  know my “story” of how I became an aromatherapist,  here is a brief account.  While I was still an executive in the corporate world, I was experiencing stress, depression and multiple muscle aches and pains.  I was at a global meeting in Philadelphia with my corporate colleagues, and I had scheduled an early morning massage to help manage the stress and pain.

Who arrived at 6 a.m. to do the massage?   My future business partner, Barry Kapp, master massage therapist and aromatherapist, armed with essential oils (a term I had never heard before).  The two he initially put under my nose, when I asked “What is THAT you are wanting to put on me???”  were Galbanum and Frankincense.  I took one whiff and said “absolutely NOT.  I can’t join 300 people in a global meeting smelling like that!  Do you have anything people have heard of??”    So he backed off a bit,  and used Lavender and Peppermint instead.   Well, looking at where I am now, and who I am now, suffice it to say that my life was changed that morning!

Geranium
Pelargonium graveolens

Geranium earned a place in our historic celebration as it was the essential oil/plant that was the subject of my Level 1 Certification Paper!  First of all, Geranium taught me about the “ins and outs” of botanical nomenclature, and how numerous plants, especially those that were part of the perfume trade, had a very storied and often convoluted, confusing botanical history.   I finally threw up my hands on that aspect of Geranium’s history (I figured that if the botanists hadn’t solved the confusion in two hundred years, it wasn’t my job to do it in my Level 1 paper!) and instead, I wrote passionately about how Geranium literally “saved” me when I was going through menopause.

After a month or so of the typical night/day sweats and emotional turmoil, I turned to Geranium and Clary Sage and literally sailed through the rest of the process in a few months.  I had friends who were using all kinds of pharmaceutical medications experience menopausal difficulty and stress for years.   I was SO happy I took the natural route!

Historical Significance:  A botanical relative to our geranium, African geranium,  was known throughout Europe in the 1800s as a strong respiratory healer.  Even in that time, Europeans with pleurisy and other chronic respiratory issues traveled to Africa for “the cure”, as it was known.

Hyssop (Organic)

Laurel Leaf (Organic)

Laurel Leaf holds a special place in my heart.  One of my teachers, the renowned Dr. Kurt Schnaubelt, who heads the Pacific Institute of Aromatherapy, spoke about a favorite personal  application of Laurel Leaf at one of  his conferences that Barry and I attended, very early in Wisdom of the Earth’s existence.  Kurt said he loved to put 8-10 drops of Laurel Leaf in the center of his chest when taking a shower,  letting the water fall on it and drive it into the skin.   Doing so created an aura of protection around the body. 

Of course, I tried it as soon as I got home.   Since water is an amplifier, in the case of Laurel Leaf, that application technique  makes you feel so alive and vibrant!  I did that every time I took a shower for YEARS….finally, as I got older and my skin became more sensitive, I could no longer do it without causing irritation in the area.  But it was a great experience for a couple of decades!

Historical Significance:  Laurel leaf was woven into crowns and worn by ancient Roman emperors, scholars, and victorious athletes to denote honor and achievement.  Ancient Greek traditions dedicated it to Apollo, utilizing its leaves to unlock prophetic vision and intellectual clarity.  It is truly the “Essential Oil of Champions!”

Lavender, Highland 1400m (Wild)
Lavandula angustifolia

Our Highland Lavender grows wild on Mt. de Cheiron in France.  Our 1400m Highland Lavender is hand-gathered, as no harvesting equipment could possibly be brought up the mountain to the areas where the lavender grows between the  rocks. This exquisite and uniquely soft floral essential oil with high-altitude alpine purity, is excellent for deep nervous system relaxation.  

On one of our first visits to France, Barry and I attended an aromatherapy conference, where  we met Alain and Sylviane, the distillers of the highland lavender.  They invited us to visit them in their village, high in the mountains above Nice and we, of course, accepted their invitation.  Alain and Sylviane gave us a tour of their garden, their distillery, and pointed out the area on the mountain where they were harvesting the lavender.  

A couple of years later, we took a group to visit them, and had the opportunity to experience harvesting the lavender, seeing the lavender oil being produced, and  then actually sleeping in the lavender overnight in sleeping bags!  Unforgettable.  We called it our “million star hotel.”  Thus, the Highland Lavender has a cherished place in the history of Wisdom of the Earth.

Sage, Clary
Salvia sclarea

Spikenard (Wild)

Spikenard,  an intensely earthy, musky essential oil, is an aromatic aid for grounding amid major life transitions. This deep-rooted aroma  instantly pulls chaotic energy back down to earth. Our precious Spikenard is included in this Celebration because it is the essence that enabled me to “hear” a plant talk to me for the first time!  I was living in Newtown, PA then, and was out on my deck at night to let my dog out.  I heard the words “I love you” in my mind, as clear as day.  I spun around, looking to see who might have said that, as my daughter was out with friends that evening, and it couldn’t have been her.  Then I heard it again….”I love you, you saved me!”  And then I knew.

When the deck had been build by the previous owners, they had a large round area cut out of the perimeter to  permit a huge holly tree to remain.  My ex-husband had always said…”That would be a great place to put a hot tub!  We should cut down that tree.”  My very direct answer was “Over my dead body”.   He was the kind of guy who described himself as “I ask forgiveness, not permission.”  And because I traveled a lot at that time, it was entirely possible that I could come home from a trip and find a hot  tub in the place of my beloved holly tree.  So I made it abundantly clear to my husband that he was NOT to touch that tree.

I had picked up athlete’s foot at the gym (yes, in those days I went to the gym! ) so I was using Spikenard morning and night on my feet.  And I realized THAT was why, after a couple of years of my protection of her, the tree was just thanking me now!  The Spikenard had opened up that avenue of communication with the natural world that I had never experienced before.   I was laughing, I was crying….I was ecstatic!  And from then on, the experiences came frequently.  As I always tell my students, I see the ability to “tune into” this communication channel like an old radio dial…the plants and trees are communicating, but unless you can align and “tune into their frequency” (channel), you cannot receive their messages.  They are broadcasting, but we cannot hear them.   Spikenard can change that.

Cynthia tells a really funny story about Rana’s experience at Wisdom of the Earth when it was on Page Springs Road…there are cattle roaming in the area,  as it is very rural.  There was a “cattle  guard” at the end of the  driveway, but one morning, when he was visiting, the cows had managed to negotiate the cattle guard and were up by the house!  The three of them had been meditating, and when they opened their eyes…the cows were in the front yard! He was overjoyed and felt it was a “sign”, as the Nepalese people revere the cow as a sacred, life-sustaining being.

White Rose Hydrolat (Organic)
Rosa alba

White Rose Hydrolat, a delicate, ethereal floral water, is an aromatic companion for gentle skin renewal and emotional uplift.  This high-vibrational organic mist delivers a cooling, sensuous floral aroma that instantly heightens your mood. It re-energizes your system, providing vital skin hydration, and physically and emotionally fills your heart with optimism.

When Barry and I started Wisdom of the Earth,  we offered no hydrolats at all, only essential  oils.   Because they are effectively mostly water, they are extremely heavy and expensive to ship.  So they really weren’t a readily available product.  In fact, when we took a group to France to study with several of our farmers, we visited a lavandin distiller to participate in the distillation  process.  When we saw that the water from the “cook” was being drained off onto the ground, we all dumped the water out of our water bottles, and ran over to the drain pipe to fill them with the hydrolat!!  The distiller and his helpers laughed and laughed at us…no one thought the hydrolat was worth saving!!

That all changed when an aromatherapist named Suzanne Catty  released a book in 2001 called Hydrosols:  The Next Aromatherapy, and basically put hydrosols “on the map” so to speak.  More and more French farmers started marketing their hydrolats (which they called them in France, indicating that there were no preservatives or other additives in them).  While we didn’t agree with everything that Suzanne stated in her book, we were gratified that she recognized and acknowledged the therapeutic value of hydrolats.

So, although our beautiful White Rose hydrolat was not initially in our portfolio, within a year or two of Catty’s book  being released, we added a few hydrolats to our offerings, including Rose.  I did further study with John Steele, who was extremely knowledgeable about hydrolats,  shortly thereafter, and was even more convinced that they were a valuable addition to the practice of aromatherapy.  So, I expanded the number of hydrolats offered when I undertook sole ownership of WOTE in 2020.

Medicinal Benefits:  Cools hot skin flushing and hydrates sensitive, mature, or dull complexions.  Softens shallow, stress-constricted breathing when misted gently over the face and chest.
