The Wisdom of Application

While we do a deep dive into these and other techniques in our Level 1 Medicinal Aromatherapy classes, here are a few guidelines to assist you in safely using the oils:

Where to Apply: We find the most effective way to experience the plant essences is topically. Simply apply your essence directly over the area of concern (for example, over the hip for hip joint pain) and lightly feather into your skin. If you are using more than one oil, layer them one at a time over eachother.

The Soles of the Feet: If the bottle label indicates “Hot”, “Mild Irritant”, “Photosensitive” or “Skin Sensitive” (like Oregano, Thyme or Lime, Mexican) or if you generally have sensitive skin, the soles of the feet are the best place to apply an undiluted oil. The soles (bottoms) of the feet are hardy, absorbant, and safe for all oils…plus the soles are literally the gateway to the body, so it is not a “second best” place to apply the oils.

A Mindful Drop: For a single essence application, for an average adult, 5–7 drops is usually plenty. If you are layering multiple oils on the area a total of 10-12 drops may be called for. Factors such as age, body weight, height and any medications used should be considered. For children over twelve, use 3–4 drops. For little ones between 5 and 12, 1-2 drops is recommended.  For toddlers or infants, please check with your WOTE-certified aromatherapist or contact the WOTE office for guidance.  10-15 drops total in a diffuser is highly effective for respiratory relief, space clearing, and cognitive support.

Internal Use: While a few drops in a water bottle is fine, we generally do not recommend internal use as a primary treatment method. Topical application allows the body to absorb the plant’s healing chemistry directly into the bloodstream before it is broken-down by the digestive system.

Important:  Despite what you may have read or heard  on the Internet, you do not need to be fearful when you are using pure essential oils about "doing it perfectly".  As Kurt Schnaubelt, PhD, a leader in the field of aromatherapy has written, “essential oils are, by their nature, benign”. But people are different, and situations are different.  Because WOTE does not dilute our oils with carrier oils or offer blends, it is always good to first do a “test patch” with an unfimiliar or new oil (every batch is different to some degree) .
